small contributions, September 2023
Adult leaf trees, owing to their water-evaporating capacities, are active players in the game of local micro-climates of a town area, or even a single street. On very hot summer days, as has become the oft repeating reality of the ever advancing climate change, a ( large ) tree ( small ones, too! ) serves not only as green chic and decorative embellishment in the urban grey-grey, but rather as a most welcome natural air-conditioning for humans and animals alike. Albeit, even grown trees, whose roots have worked into soil's depths for many years, do require water during prolonged periods of drought, and though communal authorities work their best to supply all trees with water regularly, extra initiatives on watering by local residents, be it private homes or commercial entities, do make perfect sense, considering at how fast a pace temperature and precipitation have developed for the worse in recent years.
Better done than said, so we took to action and supplied the three chestnut trees, which are located in front of our property in the public area, regularly with water via our own utility water connection, simply incorporating a long garden hose. In total, this summer each of these trees received at about 500 liters of water ( as on 13-Sep-2023 ), always as an early morning treat. This may sound like a lot, but with a tree's evaporation capacity of hundreds of liters of water on a single hot day only, this is somehow put into perspective.
But hey - better than nothin'! Next year, should the weather again be so hot and dry ( which according to all prognoses is likely to happen ), we will again be happy to help these trees to an extra treat of water.
